First aid for an unresponsive casualty

The following advice shows the first aid treatment for an unresponsive casualty

1. If breathing normally, place them in the recovery position

2. Dial 999/112 for an ambulance and tell them you suspect a heart attack

3. Monitor their breathing constantly

4. If the casualty's breathing is absent or abnormal, begin CPR immediately

5. If a defibrillator (AED) is available, attach the device to the casualty and follow the voice prompts

The AED will automatically analyse the heart rhythm and deliver a shock, if required

The modern AED will issue voice prompts to direct you
