Organ donors honoured for the gift of life

27th September 2016

Twenty four families from all over Wales gathered at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Monday 26 September, to see their loved ones honoured for posthumously giving the gift of life by donating their organs for transplant.

Each family received the Order of St John Award given in the name of The Queen. The award is in the form of a specially designed pin inscribed with the words: ‘Add life, give hope’ and a special citation.

The ceremony was the fourth annual event organised jointly by St John Cymru Wales and NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).

The awards were presented by Wales Captain and Cardiff Blues rugby player Sam Warburton and the Prior for St John Wales, Dan Clayton Jones, OBE.

Keith Dunn, OBE, Chief Executive of St John Cymru Wales said: “This national award has been developed in conjunction with NHS Blood and Transplant to recognise the vital contribution that organ donors have made to give hope to others in need.”

“St John Cymru Wales feel that it is important to say thank you to the families whose loved ones have made the ultimate gift. Their generosity is an inspiration to us all. I’d like to thank the Welsh Rugby Union for their assistance in helping us to hold this year’s awards ceremony.”
