St John Cymru Wales awards Tunisia hero Mathew James with Life Saving Medal

17th June 2016

St John Cymru Wales is to present one of its highest honours to Mathew James, the Pontypridd man shot three times while protecting his partner during the Tunisia terror attack last year.

The Prior for St John Cymru Wales, Dan Clayton-Jones, OBE, will present the Order of St John Life Saving Medal to Mathew at the organisation’s Investiture ceremony at Llandaff Cathedral on Saturday 18th June.

Mr James, a father of three from Pontypridd, will be presented with the medal in recognition of his actions in shielding his partner Saera Wilson from a gunman’s bullets with his own body.

Keith Dunn, OBE, Chief Executive for St John Cymru Wales said: “This is an extremely rare and prestigious award and we are delighted to be able to honour Mr James’ presence of mind and control under great pressure. The recognition is richly deserved and his actions went above and beyond what anyone would have expected.”

Commenting on his award Mathew said: “I’m really honoured to receive this award and grateful to St John Wales for making it possible.”

Mathew’s partner Saera said: “Having been in St John Wales as a youngster, I know how prestigious the Life Saving Medal is and how rarely it is awarded. I’m so proud of Mathew and would like to thank everyone at St John Wales for recognising his bravery.”

The annual service recognises long serving St John members and outstanding achievements from volunteers and members of the public.
