Youth Development Officer (Maternity)

Job Type: Full Time 35 hours per week (Maternity Cover)

Salary: £19,892 - £24,992

Location: Cardiff

We are seeking a Youth Development Officer: Badgers (5-11 years) to cover Maternity Leave.

St John Cymru has approximately 4,000 volunteers across Wales with around 900 of this total being Badgers.

St John Cymru has approximately 120 units across its 7 defined county boundaries most with Badger Leaders liaising with the National Headquarters Youth Development Officer: Badgers.

Job Summary

The role will coordinate and develop a primary year’s programme accessed by the youngest members of St John Cymru Wales – ‘Badgers’. St John Badgers are aged between 5 – 10 years of age and work through a development programme which can see them attain badges and stage awards on their way to becoming ‘Super Badgers’. The role of the Youth Development Officer: Badgers will be to monitor and maintain the Super Badger programme ensuring its relevance to its target audience, as well as developing new opportunities and promoting good practice.

  • To coordinate and support the development of St John Cymru Wales’ Badger programme, liaising with third sector and educational partners to ensure the programmes suitability.
  • To act as the dedicated appointed officer for all queries relating to the organisations Badger programme.
  • To contribute to the development and coordination of an annual calendar of events including fun days, awards ceremonies and ceremonial events.
  • To ensure all relevant paperwork and administration protocols are adhered to with particular emphasis on the areas of safeguarding, child protection and health and safety.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • To work as part of the Youth Directorate team at St John Wales NHQ and in conjunction with the organisations volunteer membership (particularly Badgers and Youth Leaders).
  • To support the development of the organisations Badger programme ensuring it is fit for purpose.
  • To support the training and Continuous Professional Development of adult leaders. Ensuring compliance and escalating appropriate concerns to line manager.
  • To ensure that all registered Badger activities comply with St John governance, dealing with issues and recognising when to escalate concerns to line manager.
  • To support retention and recruitment within the relevant age category as well as adult leaders.
  • To support the Marketing Manager, PR Manager and other relevant members of staff to produce relevant literature and promotional material.
  • To coordinate working groups / sub groups where deemed necessary.
  • Respond to expressions of interest or queries from potential new youth volunteers
  • Contribute to the research of best practice for the induction and retention of volunteers and implement a structured induction plan.
  • Compile standardised statistics and reports on levels of attainment within the organisation and produce benchmarking criteria’s.
  • Actively contribute to the fundraising endeavours of the organisation by highlighting funding opportunities and needs, communicating these to your Line Manager and the Fundraising Department.
  • Support the development and administration of the youth sections within the organisations member database
  • Ensure safeguarding practices are adhered to within all relevant registered activity.
  • To promote national honours and awards, including bravery and first aid commendations
  • To facilitate the annual county and national ‘Badger’ of the Year’ competitions following set guidance and procedures.
  • To deal with all administration pertaining to the Badger programme, including issuing certificates and forms of attainment, as well as registering activities and issuing news and updates.
  • To support the organisations youth overseas programme and opportunities.
  • To be the first point of contact for County Badger Officers.
  • To promote all national and local events.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as delegated by your Line Manager.

Trainer (Casual basis)

Wrexham & Llandudno based (to cover all of North Wales)

As St John Cymru grows and develops we are seeking motivated and qualified trainers with a passion for teaching and the aspiration to make a difference. The post holders will have experience in first aid and / or health and safety subjects.

The ability to speak welsh will be an advantage.

Applicants will be provided with additional training and on-going development opportunities.
