1. A choking infant may have the following symptoms:

Mild obstruction - Infant is able to cough, but has difficulty crying or making any other noise.

Severe obstruction - Infant is unable to make any noise or breathe, with eventual loss of responsiveness.

2. Never use abdominal thrusts on an infant.

3. Lay the infant face down along your thigh, supporting their back and chin. Give up to five back blows.

4. Look inside the infant's mouth. Remove any obvious obstruction with fingertips.

5. If choking persists, lay the infant on their back and give up to five chest thrusts. Place two fingers at the breastbone, one finger's breath below the nipple line, and push with a downwards motion towards the infant's head.

6. Carry out a visual check of the infant's mouth after each chest thrust. Remove any obstruction with your fingertips.

7. If the infant is still choking, repeat back blows and chest thrusts, checking mouth after each step.

8. After one cycle of back blows and chest thrusts, dial 999/112 for an ambulance.

9. Continue cycles as required, or until the paramedics take over.

10. If the infant becomes unresponsive, carry out CPR for one minute. Then dial 999/112 for an ambulance, taking the infant wth you.

When Tim Ravenhill got to his desk at BT in Cardiff, he thought it was going to be a normal day at the office. He didn’t expect to need first aid, but a medical emergency can happen anywhere
