Door-to-door fundraising

Door to door fundraising

St John Cymru-Wales is the leading first aid charity in Wales and aims to put a first aider in every home in the country.

As a registered charity, we depend on the charitable giving of individuals. In order to raise awareness of and donations for the charitable work of St John Wales, a door-to-door fundraising scheme is used. The scheme comprises of a team of fundraisers canvassing house-to-house for donations via direct debit to help with our charitable work.

We know that a face-to-face experience can be daunting, and it can be hard to trust a fundraiser on just their word. To bring peace of mind, regular updates of the location of face-to face fundraising teams will be posted below, so that when you get a knock on the door from one of our fundraisers, you know that they are someone you can trust.

We currently have door-to-door fundraising teams working in the following postcode areas:

Port Talbot team postcode activity:

SA1, SA2, SA3, SA4, SA5, SA6, SA7, SA8, SA10, SA11, SA12, SA13, CF47, CF48

Abergele team postcode activity:

LL29, LL28, LL31, LL32, LL34, LL16, LL15, CH7, LL24, LL21, LL15, LL16, LL26, LL27, LL25, LL12, LL13, LL14, LL22, LL18, LL17, LL30

The scheme is contracted to a firm called Wesser Ltd, who specialise in this kind of fundraising. They have been working with St John Wales since 2005, and are also employed by St John Ambulance (England).

Once trained, the fundraisers begin canvassing, being shadowed by a more experienced fundraiser in their initial weeks. The fundraisers all carry identification badges which include an identification number. These are to be displayed at all times and should any member of the public wish to verify the fundraisers validity they are encouraged to do so by contacting the supporter hotline. All our fundraisers wear sweatshirts/t-shirts bearing the St John logo, they do not wear St John Brigade uniforms in order to avoid confusion. They do not collect cash donations, in fact they are forbidden to do so. When engaging with the public, a scripted message is used, which is approved by St John Wales, giving a general overview of the work of the charity. Where possible, fundraisers are given information about activities in the area where they are working in order to further raise awareness and direct those who are interested in volunteering to the relevant place.

The Fundraisers work 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. Their work is very demanding, both physically and mentally. They work in all weathers, all year round. They knock on roughly 200,000 doors a year. We currently have over 15,000 supporters who have been recruited by Wesser continuing to donate to us on a regular basis. Processing all those donations and keeping in contact with all those supporters is very time consuming, and this is also part of the service Wesser provide. In order to cover the cost of recruiting and training the fundraisers, paying their salaries, and handling all of the processing requirements, Wesser receive a percentage of the donations they secure. The fundraising cost is 45% of the donation in the first two years, and only 10% of the donation in year three. After the third year, there is no fundraising fee. Most of our supporters continue to give for five years and we have an excellent track record of fundraising in this way. Details of this are made very clear to those who make donations, both verbally by the fundraiser and in writing on the Direct Debit mandate. This is a risk free financial arrangement.

For many people a door to door fundraiser is the first person they meet who represents St John Wales. For most members of the public, these fundraisers ARE St John Wales, and therefore we want to uphold our own reputation by supporting them and providing the public with a positive impression of the work they do. The money they raise enables a number of St John Wales projects to continue. Without the Wesser door to door scheme our work would have to be significantly curtailed.
