CEO Blog: 'How do you save a life?'

16th March 2018

By Julia Hobbs, Chief Executive, St John Cymru

You’re probably used to seeing our St John Cymru volunteers at major events like the rugby, dressed in their distinctive green and black uniforms.

In fact, if you’re one of our members then there’s a high chance you will have signed up to be on duty at one of these events during your time with us.

This week, I’d like to add a different colour into the mix – bright yellow.

It’s the colour of our Centenary logo – featuring ‘100’ in bold numbers – and it’s also the colour of the buckets that 45 volunteers held in their hands at the gates to the Principality Stadium last Sunday.

Standing in the cold (trying to dodge the showers) they gave up their time to raise money for St John Cymru so that we can continue to be there when people need us most.

There we were on the outside of the stadium taking donations from rugby fans – as they arrived to watch Wales take on Italy – and on the inside making sure those same fans stayed safe.

It didn’t end there though. That bright yellow colour was to be seen again during the match.

The Wales players wore jackets with our yellow Centenary logo on the sleeve, while they sang the national anthem – a very proud moment, captured perfectly by the TV cameras!

Plus, a 30 second video – filled with yellow – played out on the big screens in front of all those very same rugby fans who had so kindly put coins and notes into our buckets on the way in.

What a fantastic day for our St John family to be part of – all topped off with a Wales win!

I hope the next time the fans see our volunteers in their green and blacks they also remember the bright yellow, knowing how much their donations help us to continue to be there.

Oh, and if you’re wondering how much money went into those bright yellow buckets, I’m thrilled to say it was an impressive £3,212.72!

So, thank you if you provided medical cover that day or if you held a bucket for 4 hours or if you donated money. How do you save a life? With all of those things combined.
