CEO Blog: It’s a love thing

16th February 2018

By Julia Hobbs, Chief Executive, St John Cymru-Wales

Love is definitely in the air right now – and I’m not just talking about Valentine’s cards and flowers. There’s something special happening.

I’m sitting in my office. The door is open, so people know that it’s ok to drop in and have a chat over a cup of tea.

Downstairs, students are arriving for their first aid courses. They’re being met by trainers who are about to pass on vital skills, including how to re-start a heart.

In an office down the corridor, heart-shaped sweets are being shared among colleagues and at one desk a bright young woman is sitting there, planning her next bone marrow donation.

She’ll be reading this and feeling embarrassed that I’m mentioning her – but it got me thinking.

Here’s someone that goes out of their way to help someone else – showing compassion, kindness and charity. By definition, that’s love.

Every day at St John Cymru-Wales, our staff and volunteers show love for other people and in some way they contribute to saving lives.

But how about sharing the love around?

Our lives are touched by all sorts of issues and events that we shouldn’t have to choose between one good cause and another.

There are lots of ways in which charities can support each other and help to spread the good work we all do.

In my opinion, it’s ok to plan that coffee morning for Macmillan or help out at your local sailing club raising money for the RNLI.

And it’s definitely ok to talk about it.

When the heart-shaped sweets have all gone and the Valentine’s cards have been put out with the recycling, don’t be afraid to share the love.
